The National Sports University Bill 2018 has been passed by the Lok Sabha in August 2018. This will pave the way to set up India’s first National Sports University in Imphal (West), Manipur.
The special sports university will be first of its kind in India. The government plans to provide sports education in the areas of sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching through this dedicated sports institution. The Bill will replace an ordinance promulgated on May 31. The sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore said the university would be set up at a cost of ₹524 crore.
The government has signed an agreement with two Australian universities — University of Canberra and Victoria University — for development of curriculum, research facilities and laboratories, among others.
