Relation Between Ibn E Battuta and General Knowledge!

About Ibn Battuta (1304 – 1369)

Full Name: Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Abdullah Al Lawati Al Tanji Ibn Battuta

He was a famous Muslim traveller, from Morocco, who visited many different places.

He travelled for almost 30 years through much of the Dar al-Islam, or the World of Islam. He met nearly every Muslim leader who ruled at that time.

Many of the journeys made by him were recorded in a book titled Rihla (Voyage in Arabic).

It is believed that he travelled almost 75,000 miles in his time of travel, which is much more than Marco Polo.

Ibn Battuta in India:

Ibn Battuta arrived in Delhi In 1334. Delhi was then the capital of Muslim India.Ibn Battuta worked for the sultan, Muhammad Tughluq, as a qadi (judge) for two and a half years. In this government position, Ibn Battuta became quite wealthy.

In 1342, the sultan appointed Ibn Battuta as an ambassador to China. On his way there, he was shipwrecked along the southern coast of India. Although he lost all of his wealth in the accident, Ibn Battuta decided to continue his journey. He visited what are now the Maldive Islands, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar (Burma), and Indonesia before finally reaching Beijing, the capital of China.

Other Travellers who visited and Explored India / Indian Ocean:

1. Fa-Hien, A Chinese scholar travelled to India During A.D. 399-414 in search of great Buddhist books of discipline.

2. Alberuni (a.k.a. Al-Biruni) was sent by Sultan Mahmud of Persia, to learn about the Hindus, "and to discuss with them questions of religion, science, and literature, and the very basis of their civilization". He remained in India for thirteen years, studying, and exploring. He wrote the book Tarikh al-Hind  (History of India).

3. Sir William Jones (1746-94) arrived in India in September 1783 as a judge in the Supreme Court in Calcutta. He is also known as father of Indology.

4. Hiuen-Tsiang (a.k.a. Huen Tsang, 603-664 A.D.) was one of the Chinese scholars who visited India in search of knowledge.

5. George Everest, A British Explorer visited India in the 19th century.

6. Vasco da Gama, A Portuguese traveller who explored sea route from Europe to India in 15th and 16th Century.

7. Hyecho, A Korean traveller who ecplored India, Persia and Central Asia in 8th century.

8. Xuanzang, A Chinese traveller who visted Indian subcontinent and Central Asia in 7th Century.
